“This retreat was amazing…”
-Mike (28 years old).
We had nearly 60 people register for the program, but with pandemic limitations, we took a maximum of 27. God gave us the confirmation: he wants these retreats to happen!
When John Paul II was a young adult, priest, bishop and even Pope, he took time to retreat from his daily responsibilities. In the winter, he frequently traveled to the mountains for a brief ski retreat, either on his own or with friends.
In our Krakow programs, we take our young adults to a convent that hosted the saint as an archbishop. It’s quite an intimate and unique opportunity as we gather on the floor to listen to one elderly sister’s personal recollections of his visits. Often arriving past midnight, Archbishop Wojtyla would put down his belongings, spend some time in prayer, then grab his skis and hit the slopes under the twilight sky.
For our retreat, we had a full day of skiing at Caberfae Peaks (before it was dark). Not the same highland culture of Zakopane, Poland – but beautiful Northern Michigan! The young adults were split into 4 houses for community meals and fellowship. Perhaps in the spirit of our patron, we did hear that Fr. Joe had his household staying up late with games and walks in the snowy woods.
Here are a few words from our awesome attendees:
“I’m so glad I signed up for this JPII Outdoor Ski Retreat. Our chaplain, Fr. Joseph Campbell was amazing and very approachable. I enjoyed our cabin experience with our ‘core’ group, which was enhanced by fellowship, games, and the food we worked together to make. I would recommend this style of retreat to any young adult that needs a break from the norm and desires to be encouraged in their faith alongside their peers.” – Zachary (25 years old)
“I really enjoyed my time on this retreat! I loved getting to meet fellow faithful Catholics and get a much needed break from the business of everyday life to reconnect with God. I would definitely attend another one of these retreats if offered!” – Anna (20 years old)
“I really had a great experience at the JPII Project’s winter retreat. Jesus spoke to me in many ways, from our prayer time in adoration to the beauty of creation while snowboarding on the hills, to the example of family life from the retreat leaders. The Holy Spirit was present to us as a community and filled us with the greater trust in the Father’s love.” – Brian (29 years old)
“As a first-time beginner skier, I had a great time learning the basics and going down the easy slopes! It was also fun to make food with the other girls in my house, and to meet other young adult Catholics. I highly recommend the JPII project trips to anyone who wants to go on a fun adventure!” – Jill (31 years old)
